Stuck in the UK

The Adventures of Liz, Dan and Ben

Monday, February 27, 2006

This is the entry with a toilet on the left, and then through to the kitchen. Evie's room upstairs is very large and also has an ensuite. This is just one apartment in a fairly large block of about 60. Me, Ben and Dan are paying 85pounds each at the moment. Boo to that..

This is the kitchen/laundry. The washing machine has a dryer built in and we also have a half size dishwasher.

This is mine and Dan's room. There is a bit of space either side of the bed, and a double wardrobe.

This is inside Ben's room. He has a quality single bed that literally goes wall to wall across the room.. There is a cupboard next to that, and thats pretty much it.

This is upstairs. Ben's room is through the door on the right, and our bathroom is on the left. Evie's room is right of where the photo is taken from, and myself and Dan share a room directly behind.

This is the lounge/dining room at our place. We are currently living at North Ealing. We are about a 3 minute walk away from North Ealing Tube station, to the west of London. It takes approximately 40mins on the tube (on a good day) to get to Westminster/Central London.

This is the front entrace to the Abbey, and the Roman Baths are on the right.

This is Bath Abbey. It is located right next to the Roman Baths which is pretty much central Bath.

This is called The Circus. These are all residences and there are three of these buildings making up the circular shape. There is a correlation between the inside diameter of this constrcution and the diameter of the original Stonehenge site.

This is Putleney (?) Bridge. There is a row of shops on both sides of the actual bridge. You are looking at the back windows to these businesses.

Awwww... (me and Ben made Dan buy a new beanie)

This is Bath. It was the most beautiful place we have ever seen. We only got to spend just over 2 hours here, and it was no where near enough. When you drive into the city from up the hill, the view of the buildings is breathtaking. We are going to come back here for a few days on our road trip.

This is the Sacred Bath, that i believe was reserved for the King.

This i taken inside the Roman Baths display in Bath. It was freezing outside, and this duck flew into the baths and went to sleep in the warm water. We were all incredibly jealous.

This just gives you an idea of the size of the ruins. Ben has taken some beautiful photos, which he will hopefully post soon.

This is one of our photos of stonehenge. You have probably all seen it before, but it was amazing. Unfortunately, it was absolutely freezing while we were there, and it was difficult to take photos without causing great pain to your hands and face. It is located in an open field, with a main road right next to it. There is major road works planned in the near future to convert the road into an underground tunnel so as to preserve the site for as long as possible.

not a very good photo, but a funny story. we ate lunch at nandos earls court on wednesday. while we were sitting there, a massive (and i mean massive) rat climbs out of somewhere and runs across the restaurant floor and climbs into a cupboard below where customers get their cutlery, plates etc. instead of dealing with their pest problem, the manager sticks this sign on the door. unbelieveable.. but funny. apparently, you are never more than 9m away from a rat in london at any one time.. boo

We had a bit of time on our hands so we decided to do something a bit touristy and check out the London bridge. Turns the London bridge is crap and the one you want to see is the tower bridge. luckily that is only a short (and painstakingly cold) walk from the london bridge tube station.

it was right on dusk when we got there and looked pretty ordinary, so we decided to wait until they turned the lights on. we found a cool little pub called the Anchor Tap. it had some really nice nice beers, reminiscent of the west coast breweries of australia (bohimian pilsner, little creatures, etc). it was an old pub which you had to duck to get through the doorways as well a navigate these treacherous staircases to get to the bathroom (not fun after 2-3 pints). I also managed to bash my head on those doorways at least once!

this is the beautiful louise who we have missed for over seven months. we caught up with lou on our first weekend here and she took us to the slug and lettuce at fulham..now, we all love you louise, but that place was the biggest dive i have been in (since Mary st). 90% of the toilets were blocked up and overflowing, there was drunken kiwis/aussies being absolute wankers, and at one point, the bar staff all got up on the bar and took their tops off (and it wasnt pretty). safe to say we wont be hanging out there to often, but i had to see the place which is infamous due to a certain member of the Dale family breaking out 'the worm' while visiting this country several years ago. since he has only been taking break dancing lessons for the last 7 months, i am sure it went well..

royal standard of england. it has all different rooms and each has its own fire place. it ws so cosy and warm, you stay here all day and get absolutely blotto on some amazing beers. my favourite was 'lowenbrau' - apparently a german brew. sensational

this is the quality of food that you get at the Royal Standard of England! it was about £11 but worth every penny. this was ben's dinner...slow roasted pork, I had the Lamb cutlets which were enormous and delicious, Evie had the Lamb Shank and Liz had a steak sandwich...boo to liz!

this is oldest pub still in operation in england. it is located west of london near a place called chalfont.

they are soooo cool.

I was really exited to this...my first real life Aston Martin! this one is a DB9...awesome. it was parked on Kensington high street. We want to move to Kensington soon.

how cool are these?? i got them from harrods. i possibly splashed out a little and paid a little bit more than you need to know.. but i think they are sweet. (oh, they are GUCCI by the way!!..)

This is where i work at the moment (Harrods). If you think the building looks big from the photo, you should see inside. the first time liz and i went there we got lost, and liz started to feel a bit dizzy... unfortunately they don't let you take any photos inside, there are big security guards everywhere!

my job pretty much bites! it's a customer service role, so just dealing with customer queries, problems and complaints - ghey! but i've had an interview with quicksilver and i have another one for a store mgr position at Hotel Chocolat - i know which one i want :)

we spend a lot of time at the greystoke.. this is us looking for jobs..

this is our favourite beer at the moment.. carlsberg... yum..

this is the street we live on. it is absolutley freezing over here at the moment. and ben has since learnt his lesson about rugging up. he got the flu after only a few days here, and was in bed for almost 7 days. outlook for the next week according to the weather man 'bitterly cold'. boo

This is our local. it's called the greystock and is a haven for passive smoking :( (but show me a place that isn't over here). We frequent this pub to watch the football as well as 2 4 1 dinners on mondays and thursdays. they also have trivia on thursday nights that costs £1. we came 2nd last the first time and last this week - we can only get better from here.

It has a good range of beers from our favourite - carlsberg - to some good 'real ales' (read: warm beer).

The staff here are pretty cool too, and the bar manager refers to us his Antipodean friends. the other person we have got to know pretty well is the girl behind the counter named cando...she seems pretty cool.

asside: how often do you see a PGA Golf video game anywhere?

hehee.. how funny is dans head in that beanie!! resembles a knob..

This is our local 'tube' station. it's about 3 mins walk from our house and the Local is onlt 1 min walk from the tube. so after a long day out in london we come home and blow the top off a pint of Carlsberg! you are looking at the Westbound platform that goes to Uxbridge for anyone interested. and hence the platform this is taken from is the eastbound platform...all stations to Cockfosters :)

the tube. the underground is such an amazing system.. there are so many tunnels and lifts and steps and all the stations are sort of unique. they are quite expensive at the moment, as we are located in zone 3 which makes travelling to the city (zone 1) a bit pricey. we have just discovered weekly passes and can top up what is called an 'oyster card' with credit and use as much as you like in a week. all stations have electric scanners that automatically take the money off your card, and can also calculate the cheapest rate for you over a day period.

This one is pretty self explanitory...

this is taken from inside kansai international airport. the airport itself is on a man made island. there is amazing infrastructure involved in its creation, and the trains take you right inside the airport. after checking in, you take a monorail like thing to the terminal. so cool.

how cool are these? you know you need them...

We turned up at the airport (Kansai - on the way to the UK) a bit early so we just had to sit around for a bit. this is us sitting around...not much more to say really.
osaka by night. namco land is pretty much a massive arcade. we thought we would see more of these sorts of arcades, but we saw more pachinko parlours than anything else. we have no idea what goes on inside those places, but they were always packed and incredibly noisy. i think the machines are like poker machines, but used ball bearings instead.

We thought this was funny. we were going through this 2km long shopping strip (Called the tenjimbashi district) which was meant to be a great place to shop...turns out it pretty well sucked! they were worse than the vally markets! anywho, we stopped in for some KFC for lunch (which was really bad, but that's another story) and we saw this on the napkin wrapper..thought it was cool.

this is also from namba. just some cool looking lanterns.

We saw this shop in Den Den town while looking for my camera. it had heaps of collectable items, figurines and heaps of oldschool nintendo & Sega stuff from sega master systems, NES's and all the games and peripherals to go with them. they also had the hand held one's which reminded me of primary schoold playing donkey kong at lunch time.

this is namba, otherwise known as the technology district of osaka. nearby to here, is den den town where you can purchase the very latest technology goods for pretty reasonable prices. dan purchased a casio camera after much discussion for approximately 500 yen. the japanese arent keen on selling casio though as it is not manufactured in japan. they are a very patriotic country.

this panel sits next to the toilet. ben gave option 2 a go, and was very disturbed by the warm water surprise!!

This is ben at his beloved Moss Burger! I believe this is the Teriyake Chicken Burger combo...(his favourite). The combo comes with a drink, chips and 3 onion rings. The only drink he ever bought was this green melon flavoured drink (completely different from mountain dew). I guess it goes with his jacket!

there was not much to it, but a flat screen tv was standard. cool.

this is a shot of our room at the Hotel Chisun.

In Osaka we found a massive shopping centre called Yodambashi Umeda. It was enormouse and had pretty much everything you could think of...including massive Parfaits. Ben decided to indulge himself! this one had all sorts fo things in there including: custard, icecream, sponge cake, corn flakes, chocolate topping, milk, jam, Cruskits, yoghurt...pretty much anything you could think of. Not bad for ¥850.
